| Local designers get up-close and personal with Japanese design guru, Mr Naoto Fukasawa. |

20 Singapore-based designers participated in a three-day Design Inevitable Workshop conducted by renowned Japanese designer, Mr Naoto Fukasawa, founder of Naoto Fukasawa Design, in January 2010. This exclusive event was organized by the SFIC, with support from SPRING Singapore under the Design DNA Programme and LASALLE College of the Arts.
The famed minimalist Mr Fukasawa set the stage at the beginning of the workshop with a powerful statement: “Minimalism is about creating harmony, not just about making it simple.”
Staying true to his philosophy, he guided the designers through a thinking process by getting them to sketch actions that people subconsciously perform on a day to day basis and to incorporate the element of the human touch into their furniture designs. Employing a hands-on approach, the designers first produced scaled models of their designs before doing a photo shoot with these scale models in which they were taught photography techniques that would highlight their designs’ uniqueness.
The workshop was capped off with a talk by Mr Fukasawa to the students of LASALLE College of the Arts, followed by a critique session by Mr Fukasawa on the new creations designed by the 20 participants during the course of the workshop.
The designers will continue working closely with Mr Naoto Fukasawa over the next few months to further enhance and actualise their designs into full scale furniture with the help of local manufacturers. A preview of this new collection will be held in June 2010 in conjunction with the Furniture Design Forum. | Design Events Await You At IFFS/AFS 2010! |

For the coming March, SFIC has lined up a series of exciting design events for the visitors to IFFS/AFS 2010!
On 8 March, 17 finalists of Furniture Design Award (FDA) 2010 will be vying for the FDA Grand Awards. Share the joy of the winners at the Prize Presentation Ceremony on 9 March, 2 pm, at the Foyer 1. Following that is the Design Conversation session by renowned designers where one will get the chance to learn more about design from the Design gurus!
Right after the Design Conversation, the visitors can proceed to PLATFORM for the PLATFORM Cocktail Networking Party where they will get to enjoy good food and drinks while immersing themselves in the company of the latest designs by the PLATFORM exhibitors from Iceland, Thailand, Singapore and many more.
