His first involvement in a
prestigious international event such as this has been an intriguing
and unforgettable experience. Discussing his design inspiration,
Mr Low explained that he drew elements from Singapore’s multi-cultural
society which is a fusion of Asian and Western influences. “Considering
the formality of the occasion, the design had to be aesthetically-pleasing,
yet practical and comfortable,” said Mr Felix Low, whose designs
have previously been exhibited in Milan, Italy and Cologne, Germany.
For Mr Low, the most challenging part of the
conceptualisation process was determining the right dimensions for
the furniture. This was a complex decision given the different physiques
of the APEC leaders. Another design consideration was how this new
furniture would match the interior of the venue and suit the nature
of the event.

The final products are contemporary pieces that still reflect Singapore’s
heritage. Named ‘State’, the armchair is reminiscent
of period furniture from the 16th and 17th century, yet has
been updated with clean contemporary lines to give it a fresh
look. The side table, Motif, is inspired by the rich tapestry
and fabric of Singapore’s diverse cultures and features
intricate carvings of geometric patterns and motifs on the
table top. Oak was chosen as the main material as it exudes
a sense of warmth and complements the existing furniture in
the Istana meeting room where the leaders will gather. For
the upholstery, a muted colour was chosen and the textured
fabric used adds depth to the design.

Apart from APEC, Urban Foundry received another
great honour this year as it was chosen by the imm cologne organisers
to exhibit in the Pure Hall next January. The Pure Hall is where
selected exclusive and trend-setting designs from around the globe
are showcased. Close to 10 new designs from Urban Foundry will be
on display at Booth D-016, Pure Hall. Mr Low said, “The collection,
which will be launched under a new label, will adopt a crafted approach
with an emphasis on construction details, structural innovation
and clever use of materials.”
Urban Foundry’s success is a proud
moment for the SFIC, which has continuously put in much effort to
boost overall design standards and capabilities of local furniture
companies and budding designers. The Council will continue to work
hard towards enhancing Singapore’s furniture scene with the
support of government agencies such as International Enterprise
(IE) Singapore, SPRING Singapore and DesignSingapore Council.
