Spotlight on our design talents

Cilicon Faytory, a new design consultancy firm specialising in furniture, interior and architectural design, made its debut at PLATFORM 2009 and FDA 2009 during the International Furniture Fair Singapore 2009/26th ASEAN Furniture Show (IFFS/AFS 2009), to wonderful response and feedback from both local and international companies.

Cilicon Faytory was started by two FDA regulars, industrial design-trained Cici Chen and Lui Honfay, an architect with a passion for design. Feeling restricted and uninspired when bounded to a single field, the duo hopes to create a new design niche through marrying their different disciplines.

“We believe a good designer has to be an all-rounder who is able to explore design fundamentals, brainstorm for creative ideas and successfully apply these ideas into various aspects of their works. Essentially, we feel that product, furniture, interior and architecture design cannot be separated. They are all linked and closely inter-related,” said the partners.

Through their participation in PLATFORM 2009 and FDA 2009, Cilicon Faytory gained much exposure and built up contacts with both local and international companies. Office Planner, a Singapore Mozaic ambassador, was one of the manufacturers that talent-spotted them. Not only did the company buy over Cilicon Faytory’s design, Office Planner also involved Cilicon Faytory in the manufacturing process and the art direction for the product marketing kits.

At PLATFORM 2009, a Finnish company, Skanno, took a liking to Cilicon Faytory’s eco-friendly range named ‘reco’, a light-weight concrete outdoor furniture series. It subsequently launched the entire collection in Helsinki in September 2009.

With the success of ‘reco’, Cilicon Faytory is presently exploring the creative use of other ‘green’ materials, such as rubber wood and bamboo for furniture designs. Currently, they are working with a reputable Malaysian furniture company, Hinlim on a new collection of rubber wood furniture.

Cilicon Faytory will be returning to PLATFORM 2010. The duo is creating a new series of designs for the ‘reco’ range, bringing the concrete furniture indoors. The duo plans to launch this indoor series at PLATFORM 2010, so do watch out for them at the IFFS/AFS 2010, held from 9 to 12 March 2010!
